GAC Aion Y and Tesla Model Y are cars from different worlds. One is a Chinese electric car that is only gaining popularity in Ukraine, and the other is almost an "iPhone on wheels". But when it comes to the real choice on Ukrainian roads, taking into account electricity prices, the state of the charging infrastructure, and, of course, the budget, everything looks a little different. This is what we will talk about.

We remind you that you can purchase home and commercial charging stations in our online storeand also use the public charging stations ECOFACTORcharging points located throughout Ukraine. For convenient access to charging infrastructure, we recommend using our mobile applicationwhich is available on iOS and Android.

Format, class and who is suitable for which

Tesla Model Y belongs to the category of full-fledged C-class crossovers. With a length of 4,790 mm, a width of more than 2 metres and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm, it looks much more massive than the GAC Aion Y. This gives it a space advantage, but creates some difficulties when parking, especially in city centres. The GAC Aion Y, with its 4,535 mm length and 2,750 mm wheelbase, fits more easily into narrow streets and tight car parks.

Tesla uses a universal platform for the Model 3 and Y, optimised for electric vehicles, with a low centre of gravity and a large cabin space. The Aion Y is built on GAC's proprietary GEP 2.0 electric platform. Although the Tesla is technically a D-class SUV, and the Aion Y is closer to a tall hatchback, in Ukrainian conditions both models are equally suitable for city and suburban use.

    Dynamics, engines and handling

The Tesla Model Y RWD is equipped with a 200 kW (272 hp) engine with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.2 seconds. In the top versions of Long Range AWD, the figures are even better: 330 kW and less than 5 seconds to hundreds. The GAC Aion Y Plus offers 150 kW (204 hp) and acceleration in 6.8 seconds. On paper, the GAC Aion Y Plus has a slight advantage, but for most Ukrainian drivers, the difference between 6.8 and 7.2 seconds is not critical.

    Drive type

Tesla can be either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Aion Y is available with front-wheel drive only. For the city and the highway, this is quite enough. In mountainous or rural areas, AWD is still preferred, but usually at a different price point.

Battery life, battery type and charging

In versions equipped with the NCM GAC battery, the Aion Y provides up to 610 km of range (according to the Chinese CLTC cycle), which is approximately 400-430 km in real-world conditions. The Tesla Model Y RWD has a range of 440 km, depending on the weather and driving style. Given the price, the Aion Y looks more favourable in terms of mileage.

Both models use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries in budget versions that are more durable to a full charge. Tesla uses 60 kWh LFP batteries in the Model Y. The Aion Y has both LFP and three-cell NCM options.

    Charging speed

    • Tesla: up to 175 kW on DC, charging 10-80% in 24 minutes
    • GAC Aion Y: up to 80-100 kW, charging takes about 40 minutes
    • Both cars have an 11 kW AC onboard charger

    Integration with infrastructure

In Ukraine, Tesla does not have its own Supercharger network, but the European version of the Model Y is equipped with a standard CCS Combo 2 port, which allows charging at most public DC stations in Ukraine without additional adapters. Most Tesla drivers charge their cars at home or at regular stations. And while Tesla is technically compatible with other networks, adapters and non-standard protocols can cause some inconvenience.

GAC Aion Y is simpler in this regard. It works seamlessly with Ukrainian charging networks. There is no need to invent or adjust anything - you just arrive, connect, and charge.

That's why we create solutions that can be easily integrated into everyday life. Whether you choose a Tesla Model Y or a GAC Aion Y, charging your car with ECOFACTOR is easy.

    Interior, comfort, multimedia

The interior of the GAC Aion Y is spacious, especially in the rear - there is plenty of room for passengers. The panoramic roof visually expands the cabin, the seats are soft, and the floor is flat without a tunnel. The overall impression of the interior is pleasant, although the materials are simpler than in Tesla.

Everything in the Tesla Model Y is built around minimalism: one large 15-inch display, almost no buttons, and a steering wheel without controls. This approach looks modern, but in everyday use it is sometimes inconvenient - you have to go into the menu to switch on the headlights or heating.

The GAC has a separate digital dashboard (10.25″) and multimedia (14.6″), physical buttons on the steering wheel, and a mobile app for remote control. Tesla also has an app, but most functions are tied to a stable internet connection.

In general, Aion Y is more convenient for everyday use, while Tesla is more suitable for those who like everything through the touchscreen and are not afraid of slightly more complex interfaces.

    Security and support systems

Tesla has long positioned itself not just as a manufacturer of electric vehicles, but as a company that is pushing autopilot into the mass segment. The Model Y comes with a range of features that other brands often offer only in their top-of-the-line versions. These include 7 airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, and a well-implemented range of auxiliary systems. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, and automatic emergency braking. All this works thanks to a set of eight cameras and a set of sensors that constantly monitor the situation around the car.

The GAC Aion Y has a slightly simpler, but no less functional set. It includes 6 airbags, ADiGO system with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, surround view and tyre pressure monitoring. Standard ISOFIX points for child seats are also available. In urban environments or at moderate speeds, this is enough to feel confident. However, the Tesla gives you more peace of mind on the highway, where you need higher speeds and more precise stabilisation.

    Key differences in security systems

    • Tesla Model Y: 7 airbags, more cameras, better peripheral coverage, semi-autonomous driving functions
    • GAC Aion Y: 6 airbags, L2 level assistance systems, focus on basic safety within the city

In general, both models are suitable for daily commuting, but if you often travel outside the city or simply want maximum automation, the Tesla gives you a slightly greater margin of "electronic confidence".

    Availability of service

When choosing between GAC Aion Y and Tesla Model Y, you should consider not only the technical characteristics, but also how easy and affordable it will be to service the car in Ukraine.

For Tesla, the undeniable advantage is technological saturation. But the service network in Ukraine is still being formed. There are private workshops that specialise in Tesla, conducting diagnostics, software updates, and repairing batteries and electric motors. However, it is not always possible to save time and money on service, sometimes you have to wait for spare parts or adaptations to Ukrainian conditions.

For GAC Aion Y, the situation looks more "comfortable" in terms of service. There are already official or partner services in Ukraine that are close to the manufacturer in terms of technical support, spare parts and "local logistics". GAC owners have more confidence in fast service and availability of various technical solutions.

If uninterrupted service support in Ukraine is important to you, the GAC Aion Y has a definite advantage. But if you are ready to invest in a brand, are ready to wait for specialised service and want to have the most technology, Tesla Model Y will be a more interesting choice.

For whom each option is suitable

GAC Aion Y is suitable for those who mostly drive around the city or suburbs, do not want to overpay and are looking for a practical car with a good range. This is an option for those who want a new car with a full warranty, easy to use and compatible with the Ukrainian charging infrastructure. It is especially relevant if the budget is limited and the priorities are economy and reliability.

The Tesla Model Y is more suitable for those who often travel long distances, are used to digital solutions and want to charge quickly on the go. If it's important for you to be part of the global Tesla ecosystem with apps, constant updates, and advanced features, this option will be closer. It is also the choice for those who look at an electric car not only as a vehicle, but as a technological product.

    Conclusions.

The GAC Aion Y and Tesla Model Y are two electric cars with different personalities. The Aion Y is all about practicality: more mileage, easier charging in Ukraine, reasonable price, and a clear interface. Tesla is about speed, technology, and a certain exclusivity. It will appeal to those who already live in the brand's ecosystem or want to feel part of something global.

If you're choosing your first electric car and want a minimum of hassle, the GAC Aion Y makes perfect sense. If your budget is not limited, and charging and setup are not a problem, then Tesla can really give you more in the technical sense. But it is important to understand what you are overpaying for. Because on a day-to-day basis, both cars do about the same thing - just in different ways.

    Frequently asked questions

What about Tesla service in Ukraine?
