FROM THE SOURCE
Lviv is the largest city in Western Ukraine, which has been the scientific, cultural and national centre of the region for centuries and is still the centre of the region today. In ancient times, it was the capital of the Galicia-Volhynia state, and later the administrative centre of the Rus' Voivodeship, the autonomous Kingdom of Galicia and Volhynia. In 1918, it became the capital of the ZUNR. After the capture of Galicia by Poland, Lviv became the centre of the eponymous province. At the outbreak of World War II, it was occupied by the Red Army and in 1941 by the Wehrmacht. In 1939, it was incorporated into the Soviet Union. Since 1991, it has been the administrative centre of the Lviv region of independent Ukraine.

Foundation.

Historians have established that there were settlements on the site of modern Lviv, in particular in Znesinnia and in the city centre around the Dobrobut market, as early as the fifth century. The surrounding lands probably belonged to the tribal formation of the White or Great Croats. In 907, they took part in the campaign of Kyivan Prince Oleh to Constantinople, which indicates that these territories were already in the political orbit of Rus. Representatives of the Pelikomoravian and Polish dynasties probably competed for them, until in 981, according to Nestor the Chronicler, they were finally annexed to Rus by Volodymyr Sviatoslavych, who built his outpost, the city of Volodymyr. After 1084, a part of the lands of the Volyn principality was formed by the Rostyslavych brothers, who became the basis for a separate Galician principality, which included the settlements that became the germ of Lviv.

The date of the first mention of the city during the Soviet period was derived from the description of the fire of the capital city of Kholm in the Galician-Volyn Chronicle, which took place approximately in the spring of 1256:
