Technical characteristics of Kia e-Niro

Kia e-Niro is available in two versions with different battery sizes: 64 kWh and 39 kWh. Each version has its own characteristics that affect the top speed and range.

  • Kia e-Niro 64 kWh provides a range of up to 455 km. The top speed is 167 km/h, and acceleration to 100 km/h takes less than 8 seconds.
  • Kia e-Niro 39 kWh has a range of up to 280 km, a top speed of 155 km/h, and acceleration to 100 km/h takes about 10 seconds.

Kia e-Niro charging speed

Both Kia e-Niro variants support the same charging speeds. The maximum charging speed for alternating current (AC) is 7.2 kW and for direct current (DC) is 77 kW. At the maximum charging speed, the 64 kWh Kia e-Niro will take about 50 minutes to charge and the 39 kWh Kia e-Niro will take 30 minutes to charge.

However, you should not charge your vehicle to 100% frequently as this may damage the battery. Although a single charge to 100% does not have a serious impact, it is best to maintain the charge level at 80-90%. Also, do not allow the battery to be completely discharged to 0% as this may damage the battery. Kia e-Niro slows down the charging process when the charge level approaches 100% to extend battery life.

Kia e-Niro charging connector types

Kia e-Niro uses two types of charging connectors that are suitable for both battery options. These are the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging connectors, which are combined into the CCS 2 connector.

Type 2 (Mennekes) is an AC charging connector that offers a maximum charging rate of 7.2 kW. It is the standard connector for charging at home, at work or at public charging stations. The CCS 2 connector is used for fast DC charging with a maximum speed of 77 kW and is available at specialised fast charging stations.

Where is the charging port on the Kia e-Niro?

In the Kia e-Niro, the charging port is located at the front of the car, where the grille is usually located in conventional models. To connect, you need to open a small cover and connect the charging cable. This is very convenient and clear for the car owner.

If you are charging at a public charging station, you may need to download a special app, get an RFID card or a subscription to access the charging points.

How long does it take to charge the Kia e-Niro?

There are many options for the charging speed at which you can charge your car. Charging stations with a capacity of up to 7 kW are generally considered slow, charging stations from 7 to 44 kW are considered fast, and charging stations with a capacity of more than 50 kW are already super-fast or ultra-fast charging stations.

As the Kia e-Niro is available in two different variants with different battery sizes, charging times will vary for each model.

The charging speed is not the only factor that affects the charging time of the Kia e-Niro. The ambient temperature, vehicle temperature, battery condition and battery age can also affect the charging time.

To give you a better idea of how long it will take to charge the Kia e-Niro, we have calculated how long it will take to charge from 10 to 80% on several typical charging stations. We are calculating for 10-80% as it is not recommended to charge up to 100% frequently to preserve the battery condition. In addition, direct current (DC) charging speeds slow down as charging approaches 100%.

Type C/F plug (European plug)

This is a standard socket used in Ukraine for household appliances. To charge your electric vehicle using this outlet, you will need an adapter to connect the Type 2 connector to a regular household outlet.

This method of charging is very convenient in case of emergency or for recharging, but it is rather slow. It is recommended that you use this plug only for a short time or when necessary. Frequent use can put a strain on the home electrical network, which in turn can lead to damage. For long-term charging, consider installing a home charging station or using a charging point at work, if available.

How long does it take to fully charge?

This is the slowest way to charge your electric vehicle. If you charge a 64 kWh Kia e-Niro 10 to 80% using a standard C/F socket, it will take around 19 hours and 36 minutes. For the 39 kWh version, the time will be 11 hours and 52 minutes.

Charging 3.6 kW

The 3.6kW charging is a slow charging speed that can be found at home, work or at some public charging stations. If you install a charging station at home, you can use this speed at your own site. Although it is slightly faster than charging through a home plug, this method is still not fast. It is best used for long-duration charging or for recharging.

How long does it take to fully charge?

This method of charging is slightly faster than charging via a 3-pin socket, but still not very fast. It will take 12 hours and 31 minutes to charge the Kia e-Niro 64 kWh from 10 to 80% on a 3.6 kW charge, and 7 hours and 35 minutes for the 39 kWh model.

Charging 7 kW

7 kW is another slow charging option. This is a charger that uses a Type 2 connector. This speed can be set at home or found at some public charging stations.

How long does it take to fully charge?

If you charge the 64 kWh Kia e-Niro at this speed, it will take 6 hours and 27 minutes to charge from 10 to 80%, and 3 hours and 54 minutes for the 39 kWh version.

Charging 22 kW

The 22 kW charger uses a Type 2 connector for AC power. This charger can be found mainly at public charging stations. This charging is faster than the maximum charging power for the Kia e-Niro, but it will not charge at full power, but at a maximum speed of 7.2 kW.

How long does it take to fully charge?

This fast charger will charge the Kia e-Niro 64 kWh from 10 to 80% in 6 hours and 15 minutes, and for 39 kWh in 3 hours and 48 minutes.

Charging 50 kW

50 kW charging is fast charging that uses the CCS connector for DC power. In Ukraine, this is one of the most common fast charging stations, although not all public stations support this speed.

How long does it take to fully charge?

Charging the Kia e-Niro 64 kWh from 10 to 80% at a 50 kW station will take just 54 minutes, and for the 39 kWh model it will take just 33 minutes.

Ultra-fast charging

Ultra-fast charging stations operate at more than 100 kW and can reach up to 350 kW. There are not many of them in Ukraine yet, and they are available mainly in public networks.

How long does it take to fully charge?

The maximum DC charging speed for the Kia e-Niro is 77 kW. This means that the Kia e-Niro does not utilise the full potential of ultra-fast charging stations. Charging the Kia e-Niro 64 kWh from 10 to 80% on an ultra-fast charger will take 35 minutes, while for the 39 kWh model it will take only 21 minutes.

Where can I charge my Kia e-Niro?

In Ukraine, you can charge your electric car in three main places: at home, at work, or at public charging stations. Each of these options has a different cost and charging speed.

Charging at home

Charging at home is usually quite slow. The average charging rate at home is between 2.3 and 7 kW. To charge at home, you have two options: you can buy an adapter to connect the Type 2 connector to a standard outlet or install a dedicated home charging station.

Charging at home is slow, but if you have a Kia e-Niro with a 39 kWh battery, this method may be more beneficial because charging with a smaller battery will be faster.

Advantages.

Charging at home can be the most efficient way to charge your Kia e-Niro. If you charge your car at night, you can save on energy costs because electricity is usually cheaper at night.

You can also purchase a home adapter for your electric vehicle, which will be a convenient solution for charging your Kia e-Niro at home. Alternatively, you can install a charging station, for which government grants may be available for electric vehicle owners.

Disadvantages.

These charges are quite slow. If you have a Kia e-Niro with a 64 kWh battery, it will take a long time to charge significantly. In addition, if you charge during peak times, the cost of charging can be on par with the price of charging at public stations, with significantly longer charging times.

If your workplace has a charging point, it can be more cost-effective to use it than installing a home charging station or using a regular outlet, which can damage the wiring if overused.

Charging at work

More and more employers are providing their employees with charging points at work. These charging points typically have the same charging speed as home charging stations and range from 3 to 7 kW, although some companies may have 22 kW chargers.

Advantages.

Some employers pay for charging, which can save you money if you use the charging station at work frequently. It also saves you the expense of installing a home charging station.

It is best to use the charging point at work when you are working - this way the car will charge slowly but efficiently, instead of just standing in the car park.

Disadvantages.

Charging at work is not usually very fast. The maximum charging speed can be as low as 7.2 kW, which means it will take several hours to fully charge the Kia e-Niro's battery.

Not all employers provide charging points for their employees, so this option may not be available to you. Even if they do, not all employers pay for charging.

Public charging stations

Public charging stations support different charging speeds. They can range from 3 to 350 kW. All of these stations are available throughout Ukraine, although each charging station may have different costs and access conditions.

Advantages.

While most public charging stations charge a fee, some, such as those in retail outlets, may be free of charge. Public charging stations are the fastest way to charge your Kia e-Niro and the only option for using superfast or ultrafast charging stations.

You can charge both versions of the Kia e-Niro in less than an hour at public charging points.

Disadvantages.

There are a large number of different charging station networks in Ukraine. Each network operates in different locations, has different prices per kW and requirements to access their points. This can be a bit confusing and complicated, but it doesn't have to be a problem.
