It doesn't shout about itself, but as soon as you look at the specifications, it becomes clear: everything is serious. The car was launched in 2023, but it has already made a splash both in China and among Ukrainian drivers who are thinking about an electric car with good dynamics, convenience, and without excessive pathos.

The BYD Song L is built on the company's proprietary e-Platform 3.0, which has already proven itself on models such as the BYD Seal. This is an all-electric architecture designed for a low centre of gravity, improved handling and a spacious interior layout. That is, the car was designed not as an "electric version of a petrol car" but as an independent product from scratch.

The design is also based on CTB (cell-to-body) battery technology. This means that the battery is actually integrated into the body and not just "inserted" into the floor. This adds rigidity and saves space.

The headroom estimate is based on the Chinese CLTC cycle, but even when adjusted for real-world conditions, the numbers remain competitive.

Interior and comfort

The interior of the BYD Song L is designed not just to look impressive in advertising photos. The approach "first comfortable, then beautiful" is really felt here. The driver and passengers get a space in which they can comfortably spend more than one hour, and this applies not only to expensive configurations. The basic versions don't feel simplistic or "bare" either.

The upholstery materials used are fabric, eco-leather or Alcantara, depending on the version. Top trims include driver seat memory, front seat massage, heated second row and heated steering wheel. Even the option of aromatising the air in the cabin is not a frills, but a nice detail that you start to appreciate after the first long trip.

The centre display is rotatable and can be used in either a vertical or horizontal position, which is particularly useful for navigation or camera viewing. It has a 15.6-inch diagonal, and the dashboard has a separate 10.25-inch screen in front of the driver. Another interesting detail is the AR display, which projects information directly onto the windscreen. This is not just a spectacular element, but a real safety benefit: you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

The sound system deserves a special mention. Most of the equipment comes with a Dynaudio system with 12 speakers - this is not an advertising gimmick, but really high-quality sound without the need for modifications. The level of detail and channel balance are a pleasant surprise, especially if you listen to something more complex than FM radio.

There is also wireless smartphone charging, multiple USB ports for the front and rear rows, 12V sockets and a multifunctional lighting system with various lighting scenarios.

Exterior and aerodynamics

Externally, the BYD Song L looks modern, even a little futuristic, but without being overly ostentatious. This is not a car that shouts about itself on the road, but it definitely attracts eyes. It looks balanced - the body lines are clear but not aggressive, the front is recognisable, and the rear looks particularly confident.

A separate emphasis is the electric active spoiler that automatically rises at speed. It's not just for looks: it's part of the overall aerodynamics, which reduces air resistance. Together with the hidden door handles and streamlined body profile, this results in an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.255, which is very good for a crossover.

The optics are fully LED, with the Dragon Face brand identity. The front headlights have a complex geometry and an automatic switching function from high to low beam. At the rear, there is a continuous LED strip that adds character and improves visibility in the dark.

The car is available in several colours, including the traditional black, white and grey, as well as several custom metallic shades. The wheels are alloy, with a diameter of 19 or 20 inches, depending on the configuration. They not only add to the showiness, but also harmoniously complete the overall look of the car.

Another point worth mentioning is the absence of chrome. The design is dominated by matte or glossy inserts, but without shiny details that quickly lose their appearance in our conditions. This is practical and indicates a reasonable approach to the little things.

Safety systems and driver assistants

BYD Song L has received a full suite of assistants called DiPilot, which includes:

The interior is quite spacious, so it is suitable for families and those who often carry passengers. The sound system and multimedia are also designed not just for the background, but for a high-quality user experience.

This car can be a good choice for drivers who are accustomed to modern electronics, smart features and digital panels. If it is important for you to get comfort and technology without overpaying for a promoted logo on the hood, then Song L looks like a logical alternative to European or Korean models.

Pros and cons in conclusion

Speaking of strengths, the ratio of price to filling immediately catches the eye. Even the basic versions have a solid power reserve and do not look "empty". The packages are well thought out, convenient for everyday use, and the interior will pleasantly surprise you with both quality and functionality. The screen, music, interior space, suspension, drive - everything is made without unnecessary economy. This is especially appreciated in a car that you buy for a long time, not just for a year or two.

However, there are also points that may stop a potential buyer. BYD does not yet have an official representative office in Ukraine, so maintenance issues will have to be resolved through independent services. The CLTC cycle for which the power reserve is indicated may be somewhat optimistic compared to European conditions. And, of course, the exchange rate affects the final price, so the cost can "float" even within one month. But if you can put up with all this, the car is really worth a look.
