A few years ago, almost no one in Ukraine had heard of the GAC Aion Y. And now this model is confidently appearing in ads on car websites. The GAC Aion Y is a compact electric crossover from China that combines a striking appearance, unusual interior, impressive range, and a fairly low price. It has been on sale in the Chinese market for several years and is gradually entering the roads of Eastern Europe.

This is one of those electric cars that do not hide under the mask of "premium", but can pleasantly surprise even an experienced driver. And it's not just about the characteristics. In this article, we will tell you what Aion Y is, what it is capable of in practice, and whether it is really worth the attention of Ukrainian drivers.

We remind you that you can purchase home and commercial charging stations in our online storeand also use the public charging stations ECOFACTORcharging points located throughout Ukraine. For convenient access to charging infrastructure, we recommend using our mobile applicationwhich is available on iOS and Android.

Dimensions that feel completely different from what they look like on paper

If you just look at the GAC Aion Y from the side, it might seem like a typical city crossover. The dimensions really don't scream anything special: the 4.41 m length sounds quite ordinary, and it's even comparable to the Volvo XC40. But as soon as you start to look at the car closer, it becomes clear that GAC engineers thought a little more broadly. They have stretched the wheelbase to 2.75 metres and thus changed the entire composition of the cabin. This additional space is not just noticeable - you feel it literally from the first second.

The front of the cabin is designed for daily driving: wide seats, a normal fit, no unnecessary protrusions. But the real surprise effect comes from the rear. When you open the rear door, you get the impression that you are not entering a crossover, but a miniature family van. There's so much space that passengers can sit freely without pressing their legs together or bumping shoulders.

The passageway is wide, the roof does not press, and the trunk swallows bulky items without any special tricks. Reviews often mention that the stroller fits in the car not at the limit of its capabilities, but calmly. This is an important point for families who want an electric car but are not ready to sacrifice convenience.

Batteries and real range: how it works in practice

On paper, everything looks like in an advertising brochure: choose any of three batteries - 51.9, 61.7 or 70 kWh. According to the NEDC, the largest version shows up to 600 km. But Ukrainian drivers have long known that laboratory figures are only a guide. What is important is what the car shows in real life, when it is no longer +25 outside, but in our typical off-season, when the roads are wet and the battery has cooled down.

Based on the experience of an owner from Belarus, you can get a fair impression. The version with a battery of about 64 kWh drives:

  • steady 390-400 km in summer
  • approximately 300 km in winter

For an electric car at its price, this is a very good result. And this difference between season and winter is logical, because batteries work less efficiently in the cold. But even taking into account winter conditions, the range is sufficient for long-distance travel. The Aion Y covers the Minsk-Brest route (about 350 km) in summer without a single stop. In Ukrainian conditions, this means that you can drive from Kyiv to, for example, Poltava or Khmelnytskyi without recharging.

It is this practical range that often becomes an argument in favour of this model, especially for those who have already had experience with smaller electric cars.

Exterior and interior: bold looks and restrained finishes

The design of the Aion Y can hardly be called universal. Some people think it's too playful, while others think it's fresh and not as monotonous as many budget electric cars. Original optics, contrasting colours, interesting body lines - all this makes the model recognisable.

Everything in the cabin is based on simplicity and digitalisation. There are a minimum of physical buttons, a large 14.5-inch horizontal screen and a digital instrument cluster. What is surprisingly pleasing is that the panel, although without a visor, practically does not glare in the sun. This is a detail that developers often forget to take into account, and drivers then have to live with it every day.

Controls of the vehicle's functions are mostly touchscreen, but in the Aion Y they are not overloaded. The interface combines simplicity and clarity, so even new users can easily find the sections they need.

Some of the technological possibilities look interesting:

  • face recognition
  • 5G
  • semi-autonomous driving

All this makes the model modern and competitive.

Comfort in the city and on the track: where the Aion Y performs best

The Aion Y doesn't try to pretend to be a premium car, but it does provide a basic level of comfort. The cabin is as quiet as it can be for a compact electric car. There is no feeling that the car "rings" or resonates. The climate works predictably, without forcing you to listen to whether it's even switched on.

An interesting point is the retractable door handles. In many models, this is a weak point, especially in winter. But in the Aion Y, the electric drive is strong enough to cope with thin ice without any problems. It looks a bit scary, but the owners assure us that the system works stably.

Another plus is visibility. Thanks to the body shape and good headlights, you can see everything you need at night. In the reviews, drivers even wonder how the Chinese managed to make light that does not blind, but does not seem weak either.

How it drives: not a race car, but very lively

Even if you don't chase big numbers, the Aion Y in the 184 hp version shows quite a serious result. Acceleration to 100 km/h in 7.9 - 8.7 seconds. And in practice, it is not felt as an aggressive start, but as a pleasant ease of movement. I pressed the pedal and the car confidently gained speed.

On the highway, the behaviour is stable. Yes, the top speed is limited to 160 km/h. But within the permitted speeds, the car feels fine, does not float and does not require constant steering.

In the city, manoeuvrability can be called one of its strongest points. Aion Y turns around where larger crossovers take two or three manoeuvres. Narrow courtyards, car parks, heavy traffic - all this does not cause any discomfort.

Charging: what you need to know before buying

There is one important nuance here that you should know about right away. In China, cars are sold with the GB/T charging standard. It is similar to the European Type 2, but there is no compatibility. Therefore, most owners immediately replace the port with a Type 2. This is an inexpensive solution that removes all the problems with charging at European stations. Although the number of GB/T connectors has also increased in recent years, the Type 2 standard is still much more convenient.

Durability and reliability

The GAC Aion Y has proven to be a very hardy electric car in everyday use. Its body has a resistant anti-corrosion coating, so even after several winter seasons, traces of rust on the metal are practically not fixed. This is especially important for the Ukrainian climate, where salt on the roads and moisture in winter are a serious challenge for any car.

On the technical side, the model's design is quite simple and well thought out. Typical chassis parts, electric drives and climate system elements work stably. Wear and tear usually comes down to standard maintenance: brake pads, filters, gearbox lubricants. With proper care, an electric vehicle does not require frequent intervention in the power electronics or battery.

The interior may show minor signs of use over time, particularly on the door trim and plastic panels. Also, in the spring, traces of moisture are sometimes visible under the mirrors, which can be removed by polishing. But in general, the trim materials and electronics hold up well and don't cause any trouble.

The Aion Y is not technically demanding and does not have a reputation for surprises. Its design is more pragmatic than innovative, which plays in favour of durability. The car is designed not for show, but for daily travel - and it justifies itself in this.

Security systems

The GAC Aion Y has a standard set of safety systems for its class, which is quite enough for daily driving. There are front airbags, ABS, ESP and traction control. In many versions, hill start assist, blind spot monitoring and collision warning are also available. The rear view camera is basic, but with good resolution.

We should also mention the semi-autonomous driving - the car is able to stay within the lane and adapt its speed to the traffic. This is useful in the city and on the highway, especially during traffic jams. There is no full-fledged autopilot, but the auxiliary systems do reduce the driver's workload.

A quick summary:

Strengths of GAC Aion Y

  • a large supply of space in the cabin
  • good dynamics for a city electric car
  • affordable price
  • real power reserve sufficient for travelling around the country
  • stability in cold climates
  • manoeuvrability and convenience in the city

Possible disadvantages

  • GB/T port should be replaced
  • design is not for everyone
  • top speed 160 km/h
  • medium level of noise insulation
  • no seat cushion adjustment

Conclusion.

The GAC Aion Y is not a car "for effect". This is a car for people who want space, autonomy, convenience and a reasonable price. It does not try to be a premium car, but honestly does everything you expect from it. It doesn't disappoint in city journeys and doesn't let you down on long-distance trips.

It is suitable for Ukrainian conditions, at least because of the combination of range, manoeuvrability and adequate cost. If you find a reliable seller and replace the charging port immediately, you will get an electric car that can serve for years without any surprises.

This is the case when I want to say: try it, and you may be pleasantly surprised by what the Chinese have done with a small but very thoughtful electric car.

Questions and answers about GAC Aion Y

Does the GAC Aion Y have enough space for daily family use?

Yes, and this is one of the reasons why the model is gaining popularity so quickly. The cabin really feels much bigger than you'd expect from a compact crossover. The second row is not just for show: even taller passengers can sit there, and the boot can easily take a stroller or other bulky items.

How does the GAC Aion Y battery behave in cold weather?

The range in winter is noticeably reduced, but not critically so. Even in the colder months, the car provides enough range for daily commuting and intercity trips. This is typical behaviour for any electric car, and the Aion Y does not break the rules here.

Is the Aion Y suitable for long trips on the road?

It is suitable if you adjust your pace and travel plan to the capabilities of the electric car. At normal speeds, the car is confident, does not float and does not cause discomfort. The 160 km/h limit will not affect many people, because in our conditions there is rarely a need to go faster.

How economical is this electric car in daily use?

It all depends on your driving style and conditions, but in general, the Aion Y is quite frugal. In the city, it doesn't consume much, and when driving calmly, it can go for a long time without charging. If you can charge it at home, the costs are even lower.

Is it difficult to switch to touch controls in the cabin?

It is easy to get used to. The interface is designed in such a way that most of the functions are visible at once, and there is no need to dig through submenus. After a few days of using the buttons, there's hardly any shortage of them, and everything seems logical and familiar.
