When it comes to electric cars in Ukraine, most people immediately think of Tesla. It's like Kleenex for napkins or Google for search. But times are changing. Chinese brands are rapidly gaining momentum, and the GAC Aion Y is not just a backup. It is already a full-fledged competitor with an eye on the mass user.

In this article, I will honestly compare the GAC Aion Y and the Tesla Model 3 without any unnecessary embellishments. Which one is better suited for life in Kyiv, Kharkiv, or Ivano-Frankivsk? Where is it more profitable to charge, what is cheaper to maintain, and what gives you more convenience in everyday use? Let's put everything on the shelves so that you can draw your own conclusions.

We remind you that you can purchase home and commercial charging stations in our online storeand also use the public charging stations ECOFACTORcharging points located throughout Ukraine. For convenient access to charging infrastructure, we recommend using our mobile applicationwhich is available on iOS and Android.

Size and space: how you feel behind the wheel and in the cabin

At first glance, the Tesla Model 3 looks like a car with ambition - its shape, stance and dimensions suggest that it was created for the highway, not for small yards. The sedan looks restrained but dynamic, with an elongated profile and low centre of gravity. There is enough space for the driver and front passenger, but the situation in the second row is not so relaxed - especially if you are tall. The roof is lowered in the rear and passengers can feel cramped over their heads.

The GAC Aion Y, on the other hand, looks simpler from the outside, but inside it offers what electric sedans often lack - freedom of movement. Thanks to the vertical body geometry and the specially developed GEP 2.0 electric platform, engineers were able to "expand" the space in the cabin, not just around the battery. The panoramic roof, wide profile and flat floor create a feeling of openness that is especially noticeable when travelling with family or friends.

Main dimensions

Tesla Model 3

  • Length: 4694 mm
  • Width (without mirrors): 1849 mm
  • Height: 1443 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2875 mm
  • Boot capacity (rear): 561 л
  • Boot capacity (frontal, "franc"): 88 л

GAC Aion Y

  • Length: 4410 mm
  • Width: 1870 mm
  • Height: 1645 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2750 mm
  • Boot capacity: approx. 405-450 litres
  • VisThe seat above the floor: larger, more comfortable for boarding and alighting

In practice, this means that the Tesla handles better at high speeds thanks to its stance and aerodynamics, but may be less comfortable in the city due to limited rear visibility and a larger turning radius. The Aion Y, on the other hand, is not only easier to park, but also more comfortable in everyday use, especially for rear passengers. Even taller people can sit in it freely, and you don't feel the ceiling above your head at all.

If you plan to use your electric car not as a personal capsule for quick trips, but as a family car or a means of daily urban transport, the Aion Y provides more space exactly where it is really needed.

Power reserve and real efficiency

For a Ukrainian driver, a range is not only about distance, but also about peace of mind. Knowing that you can safely drive from Kyiv to Lviv on a single charge, even in winter, is an argument.

Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus has a battery with a useful capacity of 51 kWh. In moderate weather, the car can actually travel up to 410 km, and even more in the city. But it should be borne in mind that in winter, these figures drop, sometimes to 250 km. The car is very economical, consuming about 146 Watt-hours/km, making it one of the most efficient in its class.

The GAC Aion Y has a wider range of equipment options. The basic versions have a range of up to 430 km, while the top models with NCM or LFP batteries provide a range of up to 610 km. This is a serious figure, especially for long-distance travel or drivers who do not have a stable charging point. And although its energy consumption is slightly higher, it is compensated by a larger battery capacity.

For residents of regions or suburbs where charging stations are not yet everywhere, the longer range of the GAC Aion Y will be more convincing. In the city, where charging a car is not a problem, Tesla will show itself to be economical.

Charging speed: who has the advantage?

In theory, charging is a technical issue. In practice, it's about convenience and time. Especially when you have children, work, traffic jams and need to be on time.

Tesla has a serious advantage in terms of charging speed. Thanks to CCS support and proprietary Superchargers, you can get the 80% to charge in less than half an hour. Standard charging from a home station also doesn't take forever - a full cycle takes about 5-6 hours.

The GAC Aion Y charges more slowly. Although it supports DC charging up to 100 kW, we don't have much of that capacity yet. A typical AC charging capacity is 6.6 kW or 11 kW, which means that the car will charge all night on a home charger.

If you live in an apartment and can only charge at a public station, Tesla is definitely more convenient. But if you have a private house or office charging station, the speed of the Aion Y may be just right for you.

How we at ECOFACTOR help drivers of GAC Aion Y and Tesla Model 3 charge without any worries

We also provide SaaS solutions for businesses: operator platforms for managing a network of charging stations with flexible charging, reporting, energy monitoring and integration into other digital systems.

After all, both the GAC Aion Y and Tesla Model 3 are cars that need reliable infrastructure around them. And we work every day to make sure that this infrastructure really works in Ukraine - simply, transparently and without unnecessary headaches.

Dynamics and drive: for whom speed is important

Tesla has long established itself as an electric car that is as good as sports cars. The Model 3 accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and this is impressive even for those who are used to petrol cars with a powerful engine. In addition, the rear-wheel drive adds a sense of control when cornering and manoeuvring.

The GAC Aion Y is more relaxed. Even in the top-end version with 150 kW of power, it takes 6.8 seconds to reach hundreds. For most drivers, this is quite enough, but the dynamics are less sharp. In addition, the front-wheel drive makes it more predictable, but less exciting on the road.

This point is important if you often drive out of town or just like to push the pedal. In the city, both cars behave confidently.

Behaviour on the road: city versus highway

Each electric vehicle performs differently depending on the type of road. Both the Tesla Model 3 and the GAC Aion Y have their strengths, but they are not always equally comfortable in different environments.

The Tesla Model 3 feels confident on the road. It's low, with a stiffer suspension, precise steering, and good stability at speed - all of which give the impression of a real driver's car. On the flip side, it's not as flexible in the city. Due to the low ground clearance and long wheelbase, you need to be careful of curbs and potholes. The manoeuvrability is okay, but not ideal for the tight yards of old residential areas.

The GAC Aion Y, on the other hand, seems to have been created for the city. High seating position, good visibility, soft suspension, compact dimensions - all this is convenient for everyday use. It's easy to park, the view through the large windows is not stressful, and the ground clearance allows you to safely drive onto a dirt road or drive over a curb. On the highway, it behaves more calmly, but at speeds over 120 km/h it starts to float slightly, so Aion Y is not about drive, but about calmness.

If most of your trips are in the city, commuting, shopping, kindergarten and business, the Aion Y will suit you better. If you often drive on highways and dynamics are important to you, Tesla will be in its element.

Safety: trust on the road

The Tesla Model 3 has a high 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with particularly high protection for adult passengers. It is equipped with advanced driver assistants, including automatic braking, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

The GAC Aion Y has not yet been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, but it also has an ADAS system, cameras, radar, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX mounting. The ADiGO platform allows the car to analyse the situation on the road and respond to potential threats.

Tesla is the choice of those who want confirmed safety from European agencies. Aion Y looks promising, but needs more confirmation in European conditions.

Interior and multimedia: what does it look like inside?

The interior is something you deal with every day. And here, two cars take completely different paths.

Tesla is as minimalist as possible. The central screen controls everything from the climate to opening the glove compartment. For some, it's futuristic, for others, it's uncomfortable. Everything is logical in terms of ergonomics, but some drivers miss the classic buttons. There's plenty of space in the front seats, but it's limited in the rear, especially for taller passengers.

The GAC Aion Y, on the other hand, tries to be convenient for everyday use. It has two displays - the main 14.6-inch one and a 10.25-inch dashboard. Everything looks familiar but modern. More headroom, more light, a better sense of space. For those who often travel with their families, this is a significant plus.

Maintenance and repair: how not to waste time and nerves

Buying an electric car is one thing. But living with it for several years is quite another. It is important to take into account not only the technical characteristics, but also the availability of service, spare parts, and qualified specialists.

Tesla Model 3 is a technologically sophisticated car with expensive parts. There is no official representative office in Ukraine, so repairs and diagnostics are carried out through unofficial service stations that specialise in Tesla. In the event of a serious breakdown, spare parts can take weeks to arrive from abroad, and the cost of repairs sometimes bites.

The GAC Aion Y has a simpler architecture and is already supported by dealerships, in particular through importers who are developing a service infrastructure for Chinese models. Some spare parts can be found in stock, while others are available from warehouses in Ukraine or with delivery from China in a few days. The basic electronics are not as closed as Tesla's, which allows more things to be serviced locally.

Which model is for whom?

This is the question that worries us the most before buying. There is no "best" car without context. There is something that is better for you.

GAC Aion Y is suitable if

  • You often drive around the city, and parking is your daily quest
  • You have a family and appreciate a spacious cabin
  • A cost-effective approach to cost and service is important
  • Don't want to depend on expensive services
  • You value practicality over status

Tesla Model 3 is chosen when

  • You want dynamics, fast acceleration and sporty style
  • You plan to drive frequently on highways and stability at speed is important
  • You are a fan of the Tesla brand or technology
  • Ready to spend more on maintenance for the sake of image
  • You need autopilot, OTA updates, and a unique ecosystem

Conclusions.

The Tesla Model 3 and GAC Aion Y are two cars with completely different approaches to what an electric car should be. One is designed as a technological showcase with a bright name and powerful hardware under the hood. The other is quieter, smarter and more practical, not shouting about itself but fitting in very well with everyday life.

For a Ukrainian driver in 2025, the choice between these two models is not just about "more kilowatts" or "less acceleration". It's about how convenient it is to live with the car on a daily basis: charging, servicing, parking, driving with children or working in delivery services. In short, both models make sense, but for different scenarios.

Aion Y is well suited for those who think about costs not only at the time of purchase, but also afterwards. It has a lot of space, simple controls, clear service and an adequate price. Tesla Model 3 is more about emotions, dynamics, brand love, and the desire to have a little more "wow" in driving. But you have to pay for it, and not just with money.

There is no perfect option for everyone. But there is a choice. And that's already cool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tesla Model 3 officially available in Ukraine?

No, Tesla still does not have an official representative office in Ukraine. Most cars are imported from Europe or the US through dealers or grey imports. Service is provided through independent service stations that specialise in these cars.

Which model holds a charge better in winter?

Both lose range in cold weather, but the Aion Y with its large battery has a margin to mitigate this loss. The Tesla is more efficient, but its 350 km range can drop to 250 in severe cold.

Can I charge GAC Aion Y at home?

Yes, this is generally the most convenient option for this model. It supports AC charging, and with the nightly tariff, it's the cheapest.
