The NIO ET5 Touring is a middle-class electric station wagon that combines the dynamics of a sports sedan with the practicality of a family car. Although the word "station wagon" sounds a bit retro in 2025, the Chinese brand NIO has decided to give this format a second wind. This model is based on the ET5 sedan, but has an expanded luggage compartment, improved space planning and the same technical characteristics that have already proven themselves in the city and on the highway.

This article contains all the key features of the NIO ET5 Touring that will help you understand what kind of car it is, whether it makes sense to buy it, and whether it is suitable for Ukrainian roads and daily use.

We remind you that you can purchase home and commercial charging stations in our online storeand also use the public charging stations ECOFACTORcharging points located throughout Ukraine. For convenient access to charging infrastructure, we recommend using our mobile applicationwhich is available on iOS and Android.

    • Length: 4790 mm
    • Width without mirrors: 1960 mm
    • Width with mirrors: 2178 mm
    • Height: 1499 mm
    • Wheelbase: 2888 mm

These dimensions allow you to feel confident on the road without losing manoeuvrability in the city. The turning radius is 11.8 metres.

Luggage and space: a wagon without compromise

    • Base boot capacity: 450 л
    • Maximum with seats folded down: 1300 л
    • Vertical load on the towbar: up to 75 kg
    • Trailer: 750 kg without brakes, 1400 kg with brakes

There is no "franc" in the front end, but the main luggage compensates for this.

Drive and dynamics: as fast as a sports car

The station wagon is equipped with two electric motors: one at the front and one at the rear. Together, they deliver 360 kW of power (approximately 489 hp). This torque of 700 Nm ensures that the accelerator pedal response is immediate.

0-100 km/h in 4 seconds - and this is without the sound of the engine, in absolute silence. The top speed is limited to 200 km/h.

Battery and range: how far can you really go

The battery in the NIO ET5 Touring has a usable capacity of 73.5 kWh with a nominal capacity of 75.0 kWh. It is built on a 400-volt architecture, comprises 118 cells and uses a combination of LFP and NCM chemistry to deliver balanced performance and life.

In real life, the range is highly dependent on the weather and driving style. In ideal conditions - for example, in a city at around +23°C without using the climate control system - the car can cover up to 575 km. In winter, when the temperature drops to -10°C and the heating is switched on, the range decreases: you can expect around 390 km in the city and around 290 km on the highway.

In mixed mode, the real figures look like this: in summer, you can expect about 460 km, in winter - about 340 km. In other words, in the warm season, the ET5 Touring can confidently cover the distance Kyiv - Odesa without a single recharge, while in winter, the same trip will require a short stop - for example, for coffee and a 15-minute fast charge, after which you can safely move on.

Energy consumption depending on temperature and driving style:

    • Highway in winter (110 km/h): 253 W-ppl/km
    • The city in winter: 188 W-mpg/km
    • The highway in summer: 196 W-mpg/km
    • The city in summer: 128 W-ppl/km

The official consumption according to WLTP is 193 Wh/km. But in real conditions, it's 184 Wh/km.

Charging: how long to wait at the charging station

The NIO ET5 Touring supports both slow alternating charging (AC) and fast direct charging (DC). This means that you can easily charge the car at home at night or top up the range during a coffee break on the road. It all depends on what equipment you have at your disposal.

    Slow charging (AC)

For home charging or public AC stations, the model uses a three-phase Type 2 connector. Although the stations can be nominally more powerful, the built-in charger limits the power to 11 kW.

    • Maximum charging power: 11 kW
    • Connector type: Type 2 (left rear corner of the vehicle)
    • Full charge time (0-100%): approximately 8 hours
    • Average speed of stroke replenishment: 51 km/h

This means that you can get a full charge overnight in a garage or at a corporate charging station, which is enough for 400 km of driving the next day.

    Fast charging (DC)

If you need to recharge quickly, CCS DC stations come to the rescue. Here, too, the ET5 Touring proves itself to be very worthy - it can take in up to 140 kW, allowing you to get back on the road almost instantly.

    • Maximum charging power: 140 kW
    • Average power per session (10-80%): 110 kW
    • Connector type: CCS (also left rear corner)
    • Charging time from 10 to 80%: approx. 30 minutes
    • Average speed of stroke replenishment: up to 560 km/h

That is, if you are driving on the motorway, 15-30 minutes on a fast charge will allow you to drive several hundred kilometres more. The car also supports Autocharge, which means that charging starts automatically when you connect it - handy if you use the appropriate networks. However, it does not support the Plug & Charge function (according to ISO 15118).

Thanks to the battery pre-conditioning function, which can be activated via navigation, charging in cold weather will be more stable and efficient. This is especially important for those who often use fast charges in winter.

Long trips: is it suitable for the highways?

The question of whether an electric vehicle is suitable for long-distance travel remains relevant even in 2025. In the case of the NIO ET5 Touring, the answer is not so clear. On the one hand, it has a good range, fast charging and a comfortable interior. On the other hand, 400 km in real mixed mode may not be enough if you are used to driving 700-800 km a day without long stops.

In the rating of suitability for long journeys (according to the EV Database methodology, which takes into account not only mileage, but also charging speed and travel time), the model received 2.5 out of 5 points. This is an average result. It's not a failure, but it's not perfect either. The main reason for this is not the maximum range on a single charge, but the ratio of travelling time to time spent on recharging.

What does a typical trip on the track look like?

Let's take a conditional trip of 434 km, which corresponds to the route Kyiv - Ivano-Frankivsk. This is how the simulation looks like:

    • The first section: 295 km (approximately 2 hours and 41 minutes) - this car runs without any problems on a single charge.
    • Stopping for a quick charge: 15 minutes - enough to add another 139 km to your mileage.
    • The second segment: 139 km (approximately 1 hour and 16 minutes).
    • Total mileage: 434 km
    • Total journey time including charging: 4 hours 12 minutes

That is, with one short stop, you can confidently cover most long-distance routes in Ukraine. And if the charging infrastructure on your route is good (for example, WOG or UGV Chargers), then a charging break can coincide with a snack or coffee break - it won't feel like a delay.

Comfort and functionality: what's in the cabin

The car supports a modern approach to interfaces and convenience:

    • 12-inch multimedia screen
    • Voice control, Bluetooth, CarPlay
    • Climate control system with heat pump
    • Heated all seats + front seat massage
    • Electric tailgate
    • Panoramic roof
    • Wireless charging of your smartphone

The upholstery is genuine leather, the steering wheel is heated leather, and the lights are fully LED, including adaptive low beam and high beam.

In general, the cabin is not designed to demonstrate luxury, but for the comfort of daily use. And this can be felt in the smallest details: comfortable seating, good visibility, logical controls. The car does not tire the driver - and this is perhaps one of its main advantages.

Security: high scores and a full range of features

The NIO ET5 Touring takes safety seriously and has proven this in independent tests. According to the results of the Euro NCAP crash tests in 2023, the model received the maximum 5 stars. Driver and front seat passenger protection was rated at 96%, and child protection at 85%. Even in pedestrian safety tests, the car showed good results, scoring 83%. Special attention is paid to electronic assistance systems - the car received 81%, which indicates the availability of a full range of modern functions.

Everything you need is built in as standard: Lane Assist works gently and without intrusion, and Emergency Braking reacts quickly and confidently. Driver fatigue monitoring analyses driving behaviour and warns you if you need to take a break. The car recognises road signs and adjusts the speed limit to the conditions on the road. The cabin is equipped with 12 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that warns of a loss of pressure before it becomes a problem.

All in all, the NIO ET5 Touring doesn't just meet safety standards - it exceeds the basic requirements and creates a sense of confidence in any situation.

    Conclusion.

The NIO ET5 Touring looks like the answer to the request of those who do not want to choose between the practicality of a station wagon and the sense of control that is usually inherent in sedans. This car does not impose the idea of an "electric revolution", it just works - quietly, quickly and conveniently. Such a car is quite suitable as a daily family car, and as the main vehicle for long-distance travel, if you have minimal access to charging infrastructure.

In terms of technology, everything is in place: power, range, fast charging, safety, digital interface. And in terms of experience, this is a car that really doesn't tire you out. It doesn't try to be a futuristic show car, but it does everything you expect from a modern electric car and even more.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I charge the NIO ET5 Touring from a regular wall outlet at home?

Yes, it is technically possible. But charging from a regular household outlet will take more than 30 hours, so it's better to install a wall charger with a capacity of at least 7.4 kW or 11 kW to avoid turning the process into a marathon.

How far will the NIO ET5 Touring really go in winter if you drive on the highway?

In the cold season, at a speed of around 110 km/h and with the heating on, you can expect to drive about 290-300 km before the battery is completely discharged. If you turn on the battery pre-conditioning before driving, the range will be slightly higher.

Does this car have an additional luggage compartment in the front?

No, the Touring version doesn't have a front boot (the so-called "franc"). The entire space is occupied by the electrics, but the rear boot is quite roomy and easy to transform.
