The Tesla Model 3 is becoming increasingly popular in Ukraine, and one of the most common questions from new owners is how to charge their electric car correctly and efficiently. In this article, we'll look at the key aspects of charging, the differences between European and American models, and tips for saving money.

Where can I charge my Tesla Model 3 electric car?

    • Public charging stations.
    • Private charging stations.
    • A household or power socket in the garage.
    • From any socket, sometimes people run a separate cable from their apartment to the place where their car is parked near the house. Sometimes even through an ordinary household extension cord from the window of an apartment building.

How do I charge my Tesla Model 3 from an outlet?

To charge from a regular household or power outlet, you need to purchase a mobile charger.

We, the company ECOFACTORis the largest manufacturer of chargers in Ukraine. You can familiarise yourself with a range of mobile charging stations at this link. Various Cables and adapters are available hereincluding adapters from single-phase to three-phase power sockets.

How do I charge at public stations?

A map of these stations can be found hereECOFACTOR app with a map of Ukrainian stations is available for iOS in the AppStore and Android on Google Play by following these links.

How convenient is it in practice?

It is ideal, of course, to be able to connect your electric car to a charger overnight. In this case, you will not waste time visiting public charging stations, and the price per kilometre will be minimal. You don't need a lot of power here; a regular 16A socket, from which you will take, for example, 13A and receive about 3kW of power, is more than enough, as you can restore the electricity consumed during the day overnight.

If you drive a lot and the car does not have time to charge sufficiently from a household outlet overnight, you can connect it to a 32A power outlet, with single-phase charging delivering over 7kW and three-phase charging over 20kW, which will allow you to charge the car to a full battery in a few hours and is more than enough for daily use, even if you drive a lot.

For long journeys, you need to use public charging stations. To do this, just install our app for iOS in the AppStore or for Android on Google Play and have adapters to charge your car at different stations if your car is not European and the port is different from CSS2 Combo. Most fast stations in Ukraine and Europe have a CSS2 connector with a capacity of sometimes hundreds of kW, slow stations have Type 2 or Type 1 connectors. CHADEMO stations with a capacity of up to 50 kW are gradually disappearing, and the adapter for them is not the cheapest, so its purchase is not mandatory.

Home and fast charging: what you need to know

For daily commuting, most Tesla Model 3 owners need to charge their car at home. The process is quite simple: you just need to plug the charger into a regular household outlet. However, for faster charging, you can install a special wall charging station (Wall Connector), which will provide faster charging speed and convenience.

    Tesla Wall Connector

When it comes to long journeys, fast charging stations (DC-charging) across Ukraine offer fast recharging, making long journeys more comfortable. Make sure that your vehicle has the appropriate connectors to connect to public charging stations.

Differences between European and American models

Tesla Model 3s purchased in Europe have CCS2 and Type2 connectors, which are ideal for most charging stations in Ukraine and Europe. You can directly connect to most public stations without additional adapters.

    CCS2 + Type 2 => NACS Adapter

If your car was delivered from the USA, it probably has a NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector. To charge in Ukraine, you will have to use a CCS2 to NACS adapter. Another option is to replace the charging port with a CCS2, which will be a more convenient solution for permanent use in Ukraine.

It is also worth noting that there are currently no Tesla superchargers in Ukraine, but they can be very useful when travelling to Europe. It is important to remember that cars from the US that have been involved in an accident may lose access to these stations. To restore it, you need to pass a high-voltage test at an official Tesla service centre.

Battery sizes and charging speed in Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3 2018-2023 is available with different battery configurations:

    • Standard Range Plus (54-55 kWh) - the basic version with a range of about 380-400 km. Charging at a household outlet will take up to 24 hours, and at a fast charging station, you can charge up to 80% in 30-40 minutes.
    • Long Range (75-82 kWh) - a version with a longer range of up to 560-580 km. This modification charges faster at fast charging stations and takes about 30 hours to charge at a household outlet.
    • Performance (82 kWh) - a sports version with a range of about 500 km. For fast charging at a station, it will take approximately 20-30 minutes for the 80% to restore its charge.

    Charging prices in Ukraine

In Ukraine, there are two main ways of charging: at home or at public charging stations.

    • Home exercise costs about UAH 1.68 per kWh at the daytime tariff and about UAH 0.84 at the nighttime tariff. The night tariff allows you to save a lot of money with regular night charging.
    • Charging at public stations can cost from UAH 6 to 15 per kWh, depending on the charging speed and operator.

The cost of a trip per 100 km

By charging Tesla Model 3 at home at the nightly rate, the cost of a 100 km trip can be only about 25-30 UAH. This is significantly cheaper than traditional internal combustion engine cars, especially when you consider the Tesla Model 3's dynamics, which are on par with premium petrol cars.

In addition, the operation of an electric vehicle does not require maintenance such as changing oil, filters or spark plugs, which also reduces costs. This makes electric vehicles not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective in the long run.

    Charging port standards in Ukraine

Currently, the following charging port standards are common in Ukraine:

    • CCS2 (Combined Charging System) - is the most common standard for fast charging used in European versions of the Tesla Model 3.
    • Type2 - standard for slow and medium charging speeds, widely used in Europe for home charging and some public stations.
    • CHAdeMO - is a Japanese standard that can also be found at some charging stations, but its use is gradually decreasing.
    • NACS - is the standard for Tesla cars in North America. To charge in Ukraine, Tesla owners from the US will need an adapter or a port replacement with CCS2.
