Electric cars are no longer a novelty on Ukrainian roads. But when it comes to choosing one, the question arises: what to choose? The compact and affordable BYD Seagull or the powerful and technologically advanced Tesla Model Y? These cars are completely different in size, price, filling and purpose. In this article, we will analyse both of them and then compare them by the key parameters that really matter.

BYD Seagull: simple but not primitive

Seagull has two battery options: 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh. Accordingly, the range is 305 or 405 km (according to CLTC). Fast charging of up to 40 kW is supported, which is enough to recharge the 80% in about an hour. The engine output is 55 kW, and acceleration to 100 km/h takes 14.9 seconds. It’s not a race car, but it’s more than enough for daily commuting.
Despite its low price, the Seagull has:
- rotating 10.1-inch multimedia screen
- digital instrument cluster
- wireless charging
- six airbags
- DiPilot 100 driver assistance system
Its dimensions are very modest: 3.78 m long and just over 1,200 kg in weight. This makes it easy to manoeuvre in narrow streets and also saves battery power. The car has four seats, no frills, but with basic comfort. There is not much space in the back, and passengers are deprived of amenities such as USB or air ducts. The trunk is not the largest either, but it is enough for basic needs.
Weaknesses of Seagull:

Tesla Model Y: a wagon in the world of electric vehicles
Tesla Model Y has long been known and is already present on Ukrainian roads. It is a mid-size electric crossover with a long range, a powerful engine and all-wheel drive. In 2026, the model received an update: new optics, improved interior materials, new seats and additional lighting elements inside.
Model Y is available in several versions:
- Long Range RWD (rear-wheel drive) – запас ходу до 470 км
- Long Range AWD (complete привід) – до 455 км
- Performance версія – прискорення 0-100 km/h за 3.8 с
The battery has a capacity of 60 kW, depending on the model, and supports charging up to 175 kW. This allows you to add 180 km of range in 15 minutes at the Supercharger. The control interface is entirely via a central 15.4-inch screen. The interior is minimalist but high quality: faux leather, heated front seats, panoramic roof, climate control and even a display for rear passengers.

1. 1. Target audience and purpose
BYD Seagull is clearly positioned as a car for the city. This is an option for those who drive several kilometres to work, shopping or to school and back every day. It is ideal for beginners who are switching from petrol to electricity or families who want a second car for short trips. It is not intended for long-distance routes or active motorway travel.
Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, is designed as the “main” car in the family. This is a car that can be safely taken on a trip around Ukraine, is easy to use with children, transport things, and has a range that is sufficient for long-distance routes. It is chosen by those who want to combine functionality, comfort and modern technology in one body.
2. Price and availability
No surprises here. The Seagull promises to be one of the cheapest electric vehicles in its class if its price on the European market is indeed within 25-30 thousand euros. This opens the door to electric mobility for those who have not even considered this option before because of their budget.
The Model Y starts at around USD 46,000, and with options and delivery, it can easily exceed USD 60,000. This is a different level, not a massive budget segment, but rather a choice for those who are purposefully looking for a Tesla and are ready to spend the money.
3. Power reserve and charging
Tesla Model Y wins without a chance: 375+ km on a single charge, supercharger support, 250 kW charging. You can quickly recharge on the road and drive on. This is a real advantage for active drivers.
The Seagull charges more slowly (up to 40 kW) and has a more modest range of up to 405 km in the version with a larger battery. But if you charge the car at night at home and your daily commute is up to 50 km, these figures look quite adequate. It’s just different usage scenarios.
4. Comfort and convenience
Tesla has more space, both in front and for the rear passengers. You can safely travel with five of you, make a long journey and not get tired. There is also more than enough space in the trunk, and there is also a front boot. Plus: ventilation, heating, electric drives, high-quality sound, display for rear passengers.

Tesla has long had a good reputation in crash tests and regularly receives high marks. Driver assistance systems, cameras, auto-braking – all of this is already standard, plus there is an option to buy Full Self-Driving.
Seagull has not yet undergone a full set of tests according to European standards. It has 6 airbags and basic active systems, but how it will perform in a real-life collision remains to be seen. If safety is a top priority for you, Tesla has the edge.
6. Dimensions and handling

So which car is better?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. If you need a compact, economical and affordable electric car for the city, the BYD Seagull looks like a promising alternative to petrol cars. It is simple but functional. But if you’re looking for more comfort, autonomy, power, and technology, the Tesla Model Y is worth the price. This is a different league, and it is difficult to compare these cars directly because they are designed for different purposes.
Both models have a right to exist and, most importantly, open up more options for Ukrainian drivers who want to switch to electric cars.
